Sustainability

Did you know?

  • That Denver plans to build more than 350 miles of concrete sidewalks in the next 10 years.
  • That Concrete is the most used building material on earth.
  • That Concrete is always locally produced.
  • That Concrete production is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions.
  • That the majority of emissions from Concrete are from cement production.
  • That the global cement industry has fully acknowledged an industry imperative. to reduce carbon emissions in order to limit the impacts of climate change.
  • That new technologies are emerging both right here in Colorado and globally that will enable tremendous reductions in Concrete’s GWP / carbon content.
  • That the City has several levers that it can pull today that will result in lower carbon concrete in the sidewalk program right away.
  • That over the next 5-10 years, Concrete could possibly go from low carbon to no carbon AND possibly become seriously carbon negative to the point where sidewalks, roads, bridges, foundations, and buildings could become carbon sinks! Sequestering massive amounts of CO2 – putting a serious dent in the existing excess atmospheric CO2 – cooling off the planet.

On June 24, in anticipation of upcoming decisions to be made by Denver Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) about the concrete to be used in the sidewalk program, LUN Board member, Tom Oury, whose entire career has been in the concrete industry, gave a comprehensive presentation to the Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAP) of Inter-neighborhood Cooperation (INC).  The goal of Tom’s presentation was to inform and encourage INC to advocate with the city to use its procurement muscle to get behind the current innovations and use the lowest carbon concrete available for its sidewalk program.
