For me, one of the best benefits of living in Lowry is the walkability of the neighborhood. Any time that we have out-of-town guests, they almost always comment on the neighborhood being so walkable and tell us how lucky we are to have it.
Our house is located near Fric-n-Frac Field at Bayaud Park (original concert venue for Fric-n-Frac; aka Guitar Guys; aka the OWLS), so it’s about a 10–12-minute walk to the Town Center, Boulevard One or the restaurants near the hangars. It’s so nice to be able to patronize the dining establishments, Target, Starbucks, Safeway, Orange Theory, etc. without the need to drive.
Aside from walks to the Lowry merchants, Mrs. Snark and I are avid walkers in general. Listed below are some of our favorite walks in and around Lowry – with roundtrip mileage from our house:
The Shorty – a quick-hitter (15 minutes in duration) about a mile or so in length on various routes within the area bounded by Quebec, Fairmount, Alameda and Lowry Blvd.
The Confounded Bridge – a two mile walk to the bridge at the east end of Lowry Sports Park that crosses over Westerly Creek; just south of Big Bear Ice Arena.
Crescent Park – a two to three mile walk to a beautiful park near 8th Avenue and Syracuse St.
Dam It – a three mile walk to the end of the dam overlooking Lowry Sports Park. On a clear day, the views of downtown Denver and the Front Range mountains from the top of the dam are spectacular. Not surprisingly, it’s one of the most popular walks in Lowry.
Fairmount Cemetery – a three-to-five-mile walk depending on the loop taken. Home to the quietest neighbors in all of Lowry. Something like 180K people reside there and you never hear a peep out of them. My favorite Fairmount resident – Anna Quaintance. I didn’t know her very well; in fact, we only met in passing. Badda boom. Seriously though … what are the odds of a woman named “Anna” marrying a man whose last name is “Quaintance”?! When I first saw the gravestone, I was like … shut the front door.
6th Avenue – a three mile walk along a boulevard street (between Syracuse and Uinta) that features the most beautiful homes in Lowry – in my opinion. At Halloween and Christmas, many of the homes are decorated for the season making it an enjoyable walk.
Tailwind Park – a four mile walk to a smaller ,but really nice, park in the East Park neighborhood of Lowry.
Great Lawn Park – a four mile walk to a large and picturesque Lowry park with nice views of the mountains. Located just north of Big Bear Ice Arena.
Crestmoor Park – a three to four mile walk around a really nice park in the Crestmoor neighborhood – located on the western border of Boulevard One. Extremely popular with dog owners, walkers and runners.
Cranmer Park – a five to six mile walk to a large park in the Hilltop neighborhood that is home to the Sundial. Lots of beautiful homes on the way there, but neither Hilltop nor Crestmoor are very walk-friendly neighborhoods. They both have those ridiculous mini sidewalks that are like two feet wide, so you are forced to walk single file if you use them. The street is a better walking option but not as safe.
