Claire Oberon Garcia, Ph.D., is a Doctor, Former Dean, Woman of Distinction, and Colorado State Historian. As a professor of English at Colorado College, she teaches and conducts research in the fields of literature, Black Atlantic Studies, and feminist and gender studies. Dr. Garcia is the current Colorado State Historian, who serves as an ambassador of Colorado’s history. Since 1924, History Colorado has appointed Colorado’s State Historian to work with the State Historian’s Council to preserve, interpret, and share our state’s past. During her term, she has hoped to explore how Colorado has influenced the broader world, also how the world has influenced our state. She will talk this evening about the connections between historical knowledge, national narratives of identity and thriving democracies.
