Lowry United Neighborhoods (LUN) is teaming up with the Salvation Army to provide 50 fully stocked back-to-school backpacks for Lowry kids in need this fall. These backpacks will be distributed to children from Lowry Renaissance, Blue Spruce, and VOA, ensuring they have the essential supplies they need to start the school year on the right foot.

To celebrate, there will be back-to-school events at both Lowry Renaissance and Blue Spruce:

  • Lowry Renaissance: Thursday, August 15, from 3 to 6 p.m.
  • Lowry Blue Spruce: Friday, August 16, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Backpacks will be handed out during these celebrations, and we encourage everyone in the community to join in the fun and support our students. This initiative is critical in ensuring that children have the tools they need to succeed in school.

A special thank you to the Salvation Army for their generous donation of 70 backpacks to the Lowry community as part of their Pack A Backpack program. And the Denver Police Department also kindly contributed 40 backpacks for the Lowry Renaissance and Lowry Blue Spruce events.

“Education is the cornerstone of our nation’s future,” said Major Nesan Kistan, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Intermountain Division. “Ensuring that every child has access to positive learning experiences and providing essential resources, like backpacks, is more crucial today than ever before.”

The Pack A Backpack program is designed to help families who are struggling financially. According to the Colorado Children’s Campaign, more than 133,000 children under the age of 18 are experiencing poverty in Colorado. Last year, families with children attending K-12 school spent an average of $890.07 per household on back-to-school items, according to the National Retail Foundation. Many families face challenges in affording these necessary supplies, which are vital to a student’s success.
