DESCRIPTION:BLUES FOR AN ALABAMA SKY\nby Pearl Cleage\nDirected by Adrienne Martin-Fullwood\nFebruary 8- March 9\, 2025\n“It is the summer of 1930 in Harlem\, New York. The creative euphoria of the Harlem Renaissance has given way to the harsher realities of the Great Depression. Young Reverend Adam Clayton Powell\, Jr.\, is feeding the hungry and preaching an activist gospel at Abyssinian Baptist Church. Black Nationalist visionary Marcus Garvey has been discredited and deported. Birth control pioneer Margaret Sanger is opening a new family planning clinic on 126th Street\, and the doctors at Harlem Hospital are scrambling to care for a population whose most deadly disease is poverty. The play brings together a rich cast of characters who reflect the conflicting currents of the time through their overlapping personalities and politics. Set in the Harlem apartment of Guy\, a popular costume designer\, and his friend\, Angel\, a recently fired Cotton Club back-up singer\, the cast also includes Sam\, a hard-working\, jazz-loving doctor at Harlem Hospital; Delia\, an equally dedicated member of the staff at the Sanger clinic; and Leland\, a recent transplant from Tuskegee\, who sees in Angel a memory of lost love and a reminder of those “Alabama skies where the stars are so thick it’s bright as day.” Invoking the image of African-American expatriate extraordinaire\, Josephine Baker as both muse and myth\, Cleage’s characters struggle\, as Guy says\, “to look beyond 125th Street” for the fulfillment of their dreams.” –Dramatists Play Service \n\n\nClick here for tickets.

DESCRIPTION:2025 District 5 Spring Community Clean-up Day \nOur neighborhoods are cherished places\, and we want to keep them beautiful! That’s why Councilwoman Sawyer has created District 5 Community Clean-up Day\, which is a unique opportunity for community members to come together and contribute to the beautifcation of our city. Below is a list of parks\, open spaces\, and RTD bus stop benches that we need your help sprucing up. \nPlease review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. You are more than welcome to sign-up to clean a park and re-paint a bus stop! Volunteers must meet at the Montclair Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event to grab supplies. Breakfast\, coffee\, and juice will be provided. \nThe District 5 Council Office will provide these supplies for those cleaning our parks: \n\nGloves\nHand sanitizer\nDog waste bags\nBottle of water\nTrash bags\n\nThe District 5 Council Office will provide these supplies for those re-painting bus stops: \n\nBottle of Water\nGloves\nHand sanitizer\nRag\nSand Paper\nSpray Paint\nTrash bags\nFor the safety and health of everyone\, all volunteers are asked to please:\n\nClean and sanitize tools.\nWear sunscreen\nDress appropriately for weather\nSturdy footwear (no open toe shoes)\nHat is recommended\nAll children must be supervised\nDo not bring pets\nYour clothes may get stained so please dress appropiately!\n\nRemember that bus stop benches are on or near private property\, so please be respectful.
