SUMMARY:Block Builders Introductory Meeting @ Senior Planet
DESCRIPTION:YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING OUR COMMUNITY SAFER AND MORE SECURE \nLearn how on Tuesday\, Feb. 20 from 4 – 5 p.m. at Senior Planet. \n\n   Are you concerned about safety in Lowry?\n   Would you like to increase the sense of safety and community with your neighbors?\n   Do you know your neighbor’s name across the street or down the block?\n   Do you know how to contact them if you want or need to?\n\nIn January\, Lowry United Neighborhoods (LUN) hosted a meeting on crime and safety for the Lowry Community with Denver Chief of Police\, Ron Thomas\, and Denver District Attorney\, Beth McCann. They discussed activities and programs that can increase safety in our community. \nThe police are not the only ones that can significantly reduce crime\, we all have a role that can contribute to safer and more secure neighborhoods. The key is knowing your neighbors. Neighbors who know neighbors tend to watch out for each other and report if something does not look right. A secondary\, but significant\, benefit is neighbors who know neighbors make a stronger community by building social interaction and holding neighborhood events. \nThe program is called Block Builders. Other Denver neighborhood organizations have successfully used Block Builder programs for many years. It involves a volunteer block leader (or co-leaders) maintaining and sharing a private contact list within your neighborhood block or housing complex. \nAt the January meeting\, LUN announced we would facilitate an introductory meeting for neighbors who would like to learn more about Block Builders. This meeting is scheduled for Tuesday\, Feb. 20 from 4:-5:00 p.m.at Senior Planet. \nTo register for this meeting\, complete this form. \nMeeting Location – Senior Planet:\n7585 E Academy Blvd\nDenver\, CO 80230\n(Senior Planet is located behind the Lowry Beer Garden and next to the Wings Museum.) \nPlease come out and learn how easy it is to set up Block Builders on your block \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Firehouse Theater: Guadalupe in the Guest Room Opens (thru - April 20)
DESCRIPTION:by Tony Meneses \ndirected by Melissa Lucero McCarl \nMarch 23-April 20 \nSteve is grieving the death of his wife. His mother-in-law\, Guadalupe\, has moved into his guest room while she works to translate the children’s books her deceased daughter has written. Both are overcome with grief but struggle to connect. Differences in language and culture keep them separated until they find common ground watching Mexican telenovelas on the T.V. The play is a deeply moving and very funny celebration of life\, new beginnings\, and the healing power of telenovelas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here

SUMMARY:Lowry Foundation: OLLI Class - The Eisenhowers in Colorado
DESCRIPTION:OLLI at DU’s spring lineup features a course at the Eisenhower Chapel. \nThe Lowry Foundation and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at DU (OLLI) present: \nThe Eisenhower’s in Colorado: Their History and Legacy with Glenn Gravlee \nMonday mornings in April\n9:30A – 11:30A\nEisenhower Chapel \nThis course will trace Ike and Mamie’s extensive Colorado connections through four weeks of 2-hour sessions at the Eisenhower Chapel at Lowry. \nAlthough neither Dwight David (Ike) nor Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born in Colorado\, Mamie was raised mostly in Denver. They wed in Denver in 1916 and visited Colorado frequently over the four ensuing decades. Ike was stationed at Denver’s Ft. Logan in the 1920s\, and Mamie visited her Denver family several times without Ike as he pursued his widespread military assignments. Sadly\, some of her visits were for funerals of siblings or parents. \nDenver served as headquarters for Ike’s 1952 Presidential primary campaign\, and subsequently\, he established his “Summer White House” at Lowry Air Force Base.  During these visits\, Ike and his entourage escaped to the nearby mountains in Fraser for extended fly-fishing getaways. While playing golf at Cherry Hills Country Club in 1955\, he experienced a life-threatening heart attack\, from which he convalesced for seven weeks at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. This prompted controversy about his fitness to serve a second term. \nIke and Mamie left profound legacies in Colorado\, among which are the Eisenhower Chapel at Lowry and the Eisenhower Suite in the Fitzsimons Building on the Anschutz Medical Campus\, as well as multiple namesake m \nAbout the Professor:\nGlenn Gravlee is a Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at University of Colorado School of Medicine. As a retired subspecialist in cardiothoracic anesthesiology\, he has interest and expertise in the cardiac aspects of Ike’s medical history. He and his wife\, Joyce\, live in Denver and also share a cabin near the Byers Peak Ranch in Grand County\, where Ike enjoyed his summer fly-fishing breaks. Glenn has co-facilitated approximately 20 courses for OLLI at DU on a range of topics including popular music history (1950s and 1960s)\, military history\, movies\, and the Berlin Wall \nREGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 4!

SUMMARY:LUN Town Hall: Traffic Concerns in Lowry
DESCRIPTION:The next LUN Town Hall will be on Tuesday\, April 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Eisenhower Chapel and will be a presentation by representatives from Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) about traffic concerns in Lowry\, educational information  and questions and answers. \nPlease join us to hear Molly Lanphier\, Community Designer\, from the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) talk about: \nTransportation 101: How decisions get made at DOTI.” \nMolly’s presentation will help us gain an understanding of design standards\, an overview of how design decisions are made\, and the tools our community has at our disposal to make improvements. Molly will also address traffic concerns from the previous meeting held on May 2020\, and on-going issues in Lowry. A questionnaire will be provided to solicit input of potentially unsafe vehicle\, bike and pedestrian locations and concerns in Lowry. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nLearn about:\n\n– How to safely negotiate the roundabouts.\n– What warrants a cross-walk?\n– Why we can’t have more 4-way stops?\n– Why was Sports Park Blvd. closed?\n– How to report traffic safety issues.\n– What are the proposed changes to Uinta Way? \nNicole Aviles from Councilwoman Sawyer’s office will speak briefly and be on hand to answer questions. \nPrior to the traffic and safety portion of the Town Hall\, there will be a brief LUN annual meeting to confirm the slate of LUN Board members proposed for 2024. \nThis meeting is brought to you by the LUN Pedestrian\, Bicycle and Traffic Safety Committee.
